We drove to Chinchilla from Toowoomba and stopped at Bunnings to pick up a couple of supplies. Still feel completely unorganized.
Anyway, we got to the Millmerran Golf Course and checked in to the Free Camp. Room for 8 or 9 self-contained vehicles. Spots are under the trees if you are a bit worried about Gums. Discovered after the second night after all the rain that it is a bit of a drainage channel at the back. So don’t park too far back. The Manager of the bar is a real character, and his wife drives the local school bus. Anyone looking for a job they are after someone. Seems some of the country kids are a bit cheeky. They are real Queenslanders up here.

Had a great look around Town and saw all the street art. This was the old Pitman transport company’s history.

Completed in 1994 to celebrate the opening of the new Cultural centre.
This was interesting as it was the home of the first Rendezvous Capital of Australia back in 1986. The Teepee Info can be found here. https://bigthingsofaustralia.com/the-big-teepee/

One of the other main reasons to come though was to see the Camp Oven festival. These people are very clever and can cook almost anything in these things. The camp oven is a throwback to the bush when they were a necessity. The damper is always the staple with Butter and Golden Syrup. They were even teaching the young ones how to do it. We heard on the grapevine that they started cooking over a week ago and worked in shifts.

There were also competitions for beginners, Intermediates, and champions. We were very impressed with the ingenuity of these people. It was a Christmas theme this year.

These ladies did an amazing job.

The Judging was very serious with 5 judges tasting smelling and feeling the product.

There were some funny moments where you can see this pet duck was happy to pose for Duck

You can see how the wind was affecting the Camp Oven as it blew on the embers and made one side hotter.

The music was really good and brought a few tears to Viv with some of the songs. Lots of country and Western. We heard Chad Morgan was so popular they had a Mosh pit for him.

I would highly recommend a trip here if you are this way in October. Book early if you want to get into the Showgrounds where it all happens. Thousands of caravans and RVs etc.
