Childers and the Kanaks

It all started off when we went for a walk through Childers and saw some Monuments that we have missed before. How we missed them I will never know as they are very large. But when you don’t have time because you need to get from A to b you generally look at the bigger picture and ignore the plaques on the monuments. We hadn’t even noticed before that the place was called Millenial Park. This has a lot of meaning to Viv which she will share about at some stage.

Millennial Park

Well as we read all the plaques we saw that it was a Tribute to the Kanaks that were either voluntary, tricked, or kidnapped coming to come to work here in the Tropical heat of Queensland as the Colonists didn’t think they would have the stamina to clear the land and then plant Sugar Cane. They signed contracts to work on the farms and were given meager rations and clothes and blankets.

Rations and How they got here

There was also a tribute to John Thompson who was a missionary to the Kanaks on Ruddy’s Hill where the first church was built. I knew Viv would want to pray there and so I made the usual Google search of Ruddy’s Hill Childers and of course, nothing came up. So I went on an adventure into town to see if the Information centre knew about it. No, the Lady had only been here 5 years and was from Bundaberg (Bundy) as we call it in Australia. She sent me to the Real Estate Agent down the road who she said had been here for years. Nope, she knew nothing about it. Never heard of Ruddy’s Hill. So I rundled on down the street and saw the Old Pharmacy.

The old Pharmacy

There was a older lady in there with another lady. Well we got chatting away and was showing her Google maps and we were having a great discussion. The younger lady kept helping me as the older lady was a bit cheeky. In the end she said I wish so and so had been here he would know where it was. She ended up finding his card and so I txted him with a message a picture from the Millenium Memorial. Never heard back.

Family

So this morning I decides to google the Missionary name instead and found a website picture of a memorial but everytime I tried to open the website it just wouldn’t open. So this morning at 6, I decided I wanted some excercise and decided to go for a walk to where I thougt Ruddys Hill might be. There was a footpath for 80% of the way and then I would have to walk along the main highway in Austrlia it is Highway 1. Well I got to the side road a dn thought great yes this is a small hill. Got to the top and nope nothing before it started down again. Kept following it and back up again. Then what do I see just what i am loking for the Monument. I took a couple of picture and then added it to Google Maps so the next person can find it easier. Now all I have to do is go back and tell the people where it is.

I love how The Lord sends us small assignments. I am different to Viv but we are a team.
